Since each of us sees the world from a slightly different perspective, we all tend to respond to our environment in a slightly different way. Have you ever wondered why three people can see the same thing but still see it in three completely different ways?
What’s behind these differences?
Each of us has a certain defining characteristic that oversees the expression of our mental ability. This characteristic exerts a tremendous influence on how we process information and solve problems. It essentially changes how we see the world around us so that what we see aligns with how we think.
This is a very complex and selective process where our mind carefully sorts information and then processes it in a way that makes sense to us. Remarkably, all this can happen in a split second and without any conscious effort on our part.
What is a defining characteristic?
Basically, a defining characteristic is an influential expression of some personal attribute that channels your mental ability in a certain direction. For example:
1. Creativity. If your defining characteristic is creativity then your problem solving process might tend to focus your mental ability toward the creation of new innovative ways to solve problems.
2. Logic. If your mental ability is defined by logic then your approach to problem solving might favor gathering all the relevant facts first, and then using those facts to calculate the most effective solution.
3. Intuition. Perhaps you are someone with strong gut instincts who has learned to rely on intuition. With this characteristic you will probably channel your mental ability to find solutions that align with your feelings.
These are just a few of the many possibilities, but the point is simple. Your strongest mental ability is a highly individualized expression of your intellectual ability being influenced by a personal leaning or characteristic.
