Thanks for bringing up the issue, Jonathan. A large part of lack of motivation to do any particular action is because deep down we really feel it's less important than whatever the alternative is. Not consciously, certainly: we know intellectually that doing it is the right thing, the best for us, etc. - but we obviously don't feel that way, otherwise we would actually do it.

So a large part of working on motivation is to get ourselves to ask ourselves why the result of that action is important, and get to an answer that will really (truly, deep down, no playing games) resonate to the extent that it becomes us.

Once I found out what I really wanted to do and committed to it, I never really stopped being motivated (except for those phases where I just needed rest). Sure I'm still afraid of my goals sometimes, sure I sometimes suffer from a lack of belief but knowing what I want ultimately gives me the drive to get past those obstacles.

So true Anne, Lee Iacocca once said that "The discipline of writing something down is the first step toward making it happen."

I like your push-pull analogy David. I also totally relate to the difficulty of helping clients who aren't motivated enough to act on what they learn. In those cases, finding a way to help them get motivated becomes the main focus.

I like the idea of writing down the answers to these questions. This means that you can always go back to them and see where the problem lies. Have the trouble about being motivated is finding out why you aren't.

Thanks Jonathan,
Motivation or lack thereof can be a strange beast. Asking clients questions such as these ones helps get to the core of the problem......difficult to coach/mentor when client lacks motivation. I also like to look at the 'inspirational' side of things....are the clients inspired?
Motivation is the 'push'....inspiration is the 'pull'....toward the target. Thank you.
be good to yourself

Oh the beautiful sound of motivation - what makes me get motivated is a great question Jonathan!

By living in the present moment and with purpose for life makes me motivated - in knowing that there are so many possibilities out there and we don't have to limit ourselves to one thing....

Living life out loud and knowing that "it's all good."

In gratitude,
Nancy
