7 Minutes on the Garden Isle of Kauai

by Jonathan on February 16, 2010

It’s already been two weeks since we returned from the Hawaiian island of Kauai, also known as the Garden Isle. I know it’s been a rough winter for many of you, and I thought you might enjoy a few minutes in paradise.

These are some random highlights from our recent vacation. I move through them pretty quickly because I wanted to share the vast diversity that Kauai has to offer.

We had all kinds of weather while we were there, but the air and water temperature remained between 75 and 80 degrees for the most part. As you probably noticed, there are a lot of chickens on Kauai. During the last two hurricanes domestic chickens were displaced and quickly adapted to fending for themselves. They are now considered the state bird.

The house we rented was wonderful. It was in a very quiet area directly across from the botanical gardens. This was truly a wonderful way to break up the winter and the routine. Oddly enough, many islanders like to vacation in an area where they can snow ski. Just goes to show, variety is truly the spice of life.

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse of our favorite vacation spot. Please feel free to share your impressions or questions. Also, if you have a favorite retreat, we would love to hear about it.

Jonathan, that looked fabulous. Now I want to go there myself for a few weeks to just be at peace and explore. I might be in touch to find out the details of the place you rented :-)

Beautiful!

Hi Steve, thanks for the kind words. We’ve been married a long time and that’s a wonderful thing. I’ve got some cool videos that I’m hoping to post in the future. One of them is a helicopter tour of the island. What a gas that was.

This whole video is an elegant as your beautiful wife….almost. She wins hands down. She is just filled with radiance. What a magical place and your photos are gorgeous!!! An unforgettable place, and experience.

It was SO good to see more of you and your life. Makes you more real. I love the photo of you and your wife amongst the buttressed roots, as well of the one of you both standing with the vista behind you. Just priceless. You both radiate health, vitality, joy and love. So touching to see that, Jonathan.

I just love the chickens. You really gave a strong overall feel of the richness and diversity of life in this place, such a wonderful mix. And those long stretches of empty beach reminded me of my days in Australia. I’m glad they still exist. One day I will again walk them. Maybe in Kauai…who knows.

Thank you SO much for sharing all this.
It’s just beautiful, and meant a lot to me.
Hugs,
Robin

Hi Robin,

I kinda thought you might like this. Those big tree roots we are standing in are the ones where the dinosaur eggs were in the movie Jurassic Park. So many movies have been filmed on Kauai.

Pattie and I have been to this wonderful place four times in the last 14 years. It’s been a wonderful experience every time. This time we went with our daughter and her husband, it was all good.

As you might have suspected, my wife took most of the flower and bird pictures (including the chickens). We spent a fortune on organic, sprouted grain bread and fed a good part of it to the birds. They loved us.

Thanks for all you kind encouragement, it means so much.

Hi Nea, glad you liked it. This was actually 177 snap shots that I put together in “Windows Movie Maker.” I had never done that before and there is definitely a learning curve, but it was worth it. I’m going to make a longer version for the family, but wanted a shareable size for the blog.

Hi Zuzanna, and thank you for your very kind words.

We are a happy couple, but it’s also very easy to feel especially good when surrounded by such natural splendor. There is something about the peaceful rhythm of the waves that easily permeates your whole being. It can be a very difficult place to say goodbye to.

Simply stunning scenery. and definitely a place I’d love to visit at some point in the future. There are some amazing landscapes in the UK too but not many people take the time to go and explore them and see what beauty it has to offer.

Thanks for sharing Jonathan.

Hey Amit, good observation. Many of us have some amazing terrain in our own backyards, so to speak. Interesting how we can travel thousands of miles to somewhere amazing, and rarely take a day trip to enjoy the beauty near by. What’s the deal with that?

Ah the paradise that is Hawaii, and esp. Kauai! I returned 3 days ago from Maui, my 5th trip to paradise, and yes indeed it is paradise. Thank you for sharing this, and yes I had gone to escape the misery and bleak of winter too. Mahalo and Aloha!
