Two Views of Father’s Day

by jWells on June 15, 2008

Yesterday I wrote about fathers and would be fathers, who might be suffering the blues while others are celebrating Father’s Day.  Today I want to talk about the children who may have mixed emotions about this celebration.
.
As much as we don’t like to talk about this type of thing, it’s important to acknowledge that not everyone has fond memories of life with dad.  For those with abusive or unloving fathers, reflecting on the father-son relationship can be quite painful.
.
Let’s face it; many of our paradigms of pain and pleasure began in childhood.  If we had supportive and loving parents then thinking about them is usually a very positive experience.  I’m happy to say that, that’s how it is for me personally.  But I have worked with a number of people over the years that were not so fortunate.  And believe me when I say that their pain is very deep-rooted.
.
Children naturally want to look up to their parents, especially their fathers.  Happily, most fathers work very hard to earn the love and respect of their children.  Some however, don’t seem to value the privilege or comprehend the responsibility of parenthood.  The sad truth is that while almost anyone can father a child, this does not mean that they understand how to be a real father.
.
So what’s my point?
.
We should never assume that everyone else feels the same way we do about anything.  Everyone’s experiences are different and we all have different emotional triggers.  We have no right to judge somebody else’s feelings.  We should however strive to be considerate.  If your childhood experiences were good, then you have much to be grateful for.  If not, then my heart goes out.
.
I Leave you with the words of a very wise father:
.
“One hundred years from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, how big my house was, or what kind of car I drove. But the world may be a little better, because I was important in the life of a child.”  Forest Witcraft
