Thanks for the inspirational post. As the previous commenter also suggested, I think fear plays a big part in preventing change. Not just fear of the new, but also fear of loss of the old. Most people are in their comfort zone and fear stepping out of it. But that fear can be conquered by willingness, curiosity and, as you say, the genuine desire for change.

Change scares people. Why? They think they will be worse off after then the change then they were before. This is usually ran by random over analyzed thoughts of fear and worry. People need to develop a positive mind set and shift their thoughts from negative to positive. Everything is a mindset, so change those thoughts and focus on positivity.

A very interesting topic and post. I do think that personal growth leads to acceptance because with growth I think we realize we are multidimensional with both "good" qualities and other qualities we may want to change. Presumably, many people do have attributes they would like to work on and change and as they grow they realize it is important to accept not only the "good", but everything about ourselves. There are ways to accept those things about ourselves that we may want to change and manage them so that those qualities we feel are more in alignment with who we really are outweigh and overshadow those qualities we want to change. I think understanding what we should change and what we should accept and manage is a major part of our personal growth. Thanks again for the thought provoking topic.

Hello Jonathan!

My first visit to your blog, I found you through Zeenat'a blog! :-)

"Instead of resisting change, we begin to seek it out. Rather than waiting for discomfort to make us aware of a need..." This is a great statement! You've really brought out a fantastic point here. When we are aware of our selves and come to desire change, we go look for it! We look for areas to improve and ways to improve them, instead of avoiding change, we embrace it!

Very nice article!

Without acceptance, recognizing the need for change can be more of a hindrance and source of frustration than the enjoyable growing experience that it really should be. I've experienced this myself many times, and thanks to articles like this, I now have a better perspective to balance my ambition.

Hi Stephen, you hit a key point here about how people understand the concept of acceptance differently. I think Robin hit the nail on the head when she differentiated between acceptance and resignation. They may seem the same to the casual observer, but in reality they are literally worlds apart.

Well done once again Jonathan. I've finally figured out how I can accept myself now and still want to grow and change. It took a long time but it finally all clicked. I know some people have a hard time and think if you accept you aren't motivated. Maybe that's true for some people, but then I think they are understanding "acceptance" differently than I am. I accept that I still want to grow, but I'm not attached to specific outcomes. Somehow in all this I've find peace. I love my new outlook on life!

Hi Zeenat, it's one of my favorite topics also. There is this evolving sense of balance that allows for change and acceptance to coexist. Our personal growth is much more balanced when we consider the value of change and acceptance like two sides of the same coin. I always appreciate your insights, thanks.
