[...] Why do they have such a pessimistic view of getting older? Well, sad to say there are a lot of living examples that fit that description. So naturally, that tends to be the picture people carry around in their minds. Okay, remind me, what do we call it when people carry around a mental image of something? Don’t we call that visualization? [...]

To my dismay, a co-worker pointed out a potentially costly mistake I had made. We had time to correct the problem, but that is not the point.

I understood how easy this mistake would be to make and had concentrated my efforts on avoiding it. In fact, I had even sent out an E-mail one week prior outlining what must be done to avoid this error from happening.

Then, lo and behold, it happened!! I had focused so much on avoiding the error that my mind was tricked into believing the preventative measures were in place!! Had I just set my goal on achieving the desired result and not tried so hard to avoid a mistake, all would have been well! There is so much deprogramming that must happen for me before life can be enjoyable. Anxiety is constant.

Right now, I suspect my boss is wondering about my mind or even my motives. The whole scenario made me physically ill, but at least awareness of what is wrong is coming to me. I've been sick and unable to work the last two days but hope to make it in tomorrow. Also, the environment there alone is hard enough without my own anxieties and negative thoughts complicating the situation even more.

Thanks for the article.

"Your mind cannot process the thought “don’t slip on the ice” without visualizing you slipping on the ice."....So true!

Unfortunately, this is the common way we deal with situations. We focus on what we see because that seems like the larger reality. But there's so much more to reality...like the fact that we're perfectly capable of balancing on the ice, the fact that most people don't fall, the fact that most of the time we don't fall when we walk on a patch of ice, the fact that we're capable of getting up if we do fall. It's like that for everything...there's always more than what we hone in on, so we have to really adjust our lenses.

Thanks for another marvelous post!

Hi Jonathan,
I can definately identify with the creativity part. It's funny how my mind can come up with creative reasons not to do something due to certain fears or resistances.

And i've found the more I face this, and let go of the thoughts and emotions around those negative outcomes and replaced them with positive outcomes i've been much more positive and productive!

Negative target fixation--I won't forget that. And yes, I can recognize when I do it. In fact, just recently I've been worried about a certain scenario and every time I think of it, I keep trying to get it out of my head for exactly the reason you explain!

So even when we believe in the power of our thoughts, it still takes some effort to steer them in the right direction, at least it does for me!

That was a long one! But it was so worth the time to read. Sometimes, I let get fear get in the way of doing what I want. I get so worked up and fill myself with negative feelings that I end up being unproductive.
New reader, by the way! This site is nice!

A great reminder! :)

I learned about this before few years back. I cant remember that I actually have learned this until I read your posting again. Thank you very much!

Em, suddenly I thought of something... Probably fear that makes us create things that we don't want. We fear to fall down, that's why we focus on the slippery floor. We fear that we can't pay off the bills, that's why we focus on the possibility of poverty. In a nutshell, I believe we must overcome fear too :)

Cheers,
Dennis.
